Social Media, AI and the Decline of Reasoned Debate

Social media has fundamentally changed the nature of public debate. It is becoming increasingly difficult to have reasoned discussions on controversial topics because many users are exposed primarily to information that reinforces what they already believe. Recommendation algorithms, combined with AI-powered search and personalised content, create environments in which individuals repeatedly encounter viewpoints that confirm their existing opinions while filtering out or dismissing opposing evidence. Genuine dialogue becomes increasingly difficult when people are no longer sharing the same factual foundation.

A further problem is that much of the most widely shared content is designed to evoke emotion rather than encourage understanding. Short videos, memes, headlines and clickbait often reduce complex political, scientific and historical issues to simplistic talking points. These are frequently produced by bloggers, influencers or commentators whose success depends on attracting attention rather than adhering to academic or professional standards of evidence.

The business model of many social media platforms rewards engagement. Anger, outrage and controversy tend to generate more comments, shares and viewing time than calm agreement. Although it would be inaccurate to suggest that platforms deliberately seek to prevent consensus, their commercial incentives often favour content that keeps users emotionally engaged. Consequently, disagreement is often amplified, even where there is overwhelming evidence supporting one position.

Artificial intelligence has accelerated this trend. AI systems can now generate persuasive articles, videos, images and even synthetic voices within seconds. While these technologies have enormous potential for education and creativity, they also make it easier for misinformation to spread at unprecedented speed. The sheer volume of material makes it increasingly difficult for the average person to distinguish genuine expertise from confident speculation.

The United States provides a useful illustration. President Donald Trump's use of his own social media platform enabled him to communicate directly with supporters without relying on traditional media gatekeepers. His repeated claims that the 2020 U.S. presidential election had been stolen were accepted by many supporters despite courts, election officials and numerous investigations finding no evidence of fraud on a scale capable of changing the result. The events of 6 January 2021 demonstrated how repeated online narratives can contribute to real-world mobilisation and, in some cases, violence. Although the attack had multiple causes, researchers generally agree that online misinformation played a significant role.

The same challenges extend far beyond politics. AI and social media have enabled almost anyone to offer advice on medicine, finance, climate science, economics or international affairs, regardless of their qualifications. The democratisation of information has brought many benefits, but it has also democratised misinformation.

As a medical doctor, I have witnessed the consequences firsthand. Patients have rejected evidence-based treatments in favour of remedies promoted by social media influencers. I have encountered nutritional deficiencies resulting from poorly planned restrictive diets, including vegan diets undertaken without appropriate supplementation. A well-planned vegan diet can be entirely healthy, but without adequate sources of vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium and other essential nutrients, serious deficiencies—including rickets in children and osteomalacia or anaemia in adults—can occur. The problem is not veganism itself but the replacement of professional medical advice with simplistic online claims.

One phenomenon I have increasingly noticed is the way social media has become a source of "evidence" among friends, colleagues and family members. It is not unusual for people to send dozens of short videos every day, each claiming to prove a particular political, historical or scientific viewpoint. When I remain unconvinced, some become genuinely frustrated, believing that I am deliberately refusing to acknowledge what they regard as obvious truth.

My experience, however, is often very different. As I watch these clips, I frequently notice weaknesses in the reasoning. Sometimes the initial assumptions are questionable; at other times, the evidence presented simply does not justify the conclusions being drawn. In many cases, the argument relies on selecting only those facts that support a predetermined position while ignoring equally relevant evidence pointing in another direction. The result is less an objective analysis than a carefully constructed narrative.

These videos are rarely intended to persuade a sceptical audience. Instead, they are designed to reassure those who already share the same beliefs. They reinforce existing opinions by presenting information in a confident, emotionally engaging and highly simplified manner. Viewers often mistake familiarity, repetition and certainty for proof.

This creates an environment in which meaningful discussion becomes almost impossible. Two people may believe they are discussing the same issue, yet they are often working from entirely different sets of "facts", each shaped by personalised algorithms and different online communities. Each side concludes that the other is ignoring obvious evidence, when in reality both have been exposed to different information, different interpretations and different emotional framing. The discussion quickly ceases to be a shared search for truth and instead becomes a defence of identity.

Perhaps the greatest danger is that confidence is increasingly mistaken for competence. A polished video, an assertive presenter and millions of views can create the impression of expertise, even when the underlying argument would not survive careful scrutiny. Popularity begins to compete with evidence as the measure of credibility.

The irony is that the internet has given humanity access to more knowledge than at any other time in history. Yet access to information is not the same as understanding it. Knowledge requires evidence, context, scepticism and the willingness to change one's mind when confronted with better facts. Wisdom requires even more: the humility to recognise that none of us is immune from bias.

Social media is an extraordinary tool for sharing information, connecting people and giving a voice to those who previously had none. However, it is a poor forum for resolving complex disagreements. Its incentives reward attention rather than accuracy, emotion rather than nuance, certainty rather than humility and engagement rather than consensus. As artificial intelligence continues to increase both the speed and volume of information, critical thinking, media literacy and respect for genuine expertise will become more essential than ever. Without these safeguards, we risk creating societies in which people are more connected than ever before, yet less able to agree on even the most basic facts.

This is a fascinating book that presents a different perspective on the generally accepted narrative. Thomas Sowell appears to have done his homework, and the extent of his work supports this conclusion. He has spoken on several topics and presents a conservative viewpoint. Thomas Sowell said in the preface of the book that "the purpose of this book is to expose some of the more blatant misconceptions poisoning race relations in our time". He believes that too much has been assumed and too little has been scrutinised.
