Health Information and Studies


As I was listening to the news yesterday morning, I just heard a new item that almost shocked me. That having a high cholesterol blood level may be healthy after all. I have given talks and speeches on controlling cholesterol levels to people and talked extensively on “good fat” and “bad fat” to almost everybody that I had met. I went immediately to check the BBC website and could not find it, but found an article on today’s Telegraph. Which directed me to an article in the BMJ which said that 92% of people with a high cholesterol lived longer. What was said that “Lowering cholesterol with medication is a total waste of time” in those aged over 60 and the “benefits from statins treatment have been exaggerated”. However, the paper did not say having a high cholesterol is good but what it did say is lowering it by using medication is the waste of time. Of course going back to good diet is still on the cards and the article did not seem to say much about it. Although there was controversy as soon as the paper was published and while some said that the study itself had “serious weakness and as a consequence, has reached completely the wrong conclusion”. Others said more studies needed to be done.
Another study that cause me personally a stir is that overweight people live longer than those with a weight what was defined as normal. This leads to serious questions as if those with their weight above the normal BMI are healthier than those with a normal BMI. Then may a lot more studies needed to be done and a redefinition of “normal” BMI. 

As normal people going about our lives we listen to the health professionals and try our best to be as healthy as possible it goes to show that sometimes they may get it wrong. My golden rule is everything in moderation and avoid drugs.

After listening to Thomas Sowell, who wrote a book on Social Justice Fallacies. "A thought-provoking Challenge to Modern Social Justice Narratives". I now understand the position of the USA Conservatives among our colleagues.
